Ernestine Grigsby Recollections of Ida Shaw Martin Interview, January 1984

Ernestine Block Grigsby, University of Colorado Boulder, shares her recollections of Tri Delta Founder Sarah Ida Shaw Martin, Boston University. Ernestine discusses what little is known about Ida's marriage and personal life, the illness she experienced towards the end of her life, and the role she played in the writing of ritual and constitutions and bylaws for many fraternities and sororities as well as the sorority handbook. She also notes Ida's fondness for emeralds, fine jewelry, and pretty clothing and recalls Ida's lifelong attachment to Tri Delta and recounts her attendance at Ida's funeral.

Ernestine Grigsby's Recollections Interview, August 1982

Past President Ernestine Block Grigsby, University of Colorado Boulder, first speaks about recruitment and chapter life during her collegiate years, including a visit from R. Louise Fitch, Knox College, World War I, and the Spanish flu pandemic. She then discusses her experiences visiting chapters as a deputy of Theta Province, attending her first Tri Delta Convention in 1922, and developing the National Panhellenic Conference. Ernestine also relates stories about Founder Sarah Ida Shaw Martin, Boston University, and the early days of Tri Delta and shares memories of attending Sarah's funeral.

I.S.M. to Amy Letter, c. 1908-1914

Founder Sarah Ida Shaw Martin, Boston University, writes to Amy Parmelee, Northwestern University, about the development of Tri Delta's type as a Fraternity, noting that chapters and individual members should understand that they are part of a national organization. Martin then writes about the publication and distribution of The Sorority Handbook and her plans for future editions. A note summarizing the contents accompanies the letter.
